Jonathan Savage is relaxing in Palm Beach, enjoying the beauty of the sunset over the water, from the home he designed as his refuge from the hectic life of creating interiors around the world. “The goal was to create a spa-like, calming environment.” As you would expect, it is classic ‘Savage’, “It is simplistic design with a bit of a flare, a lot of texture, a lot of beautiful intentional lighting, and some color from time to time.”
Jonathan warmed to Palm Beach when he created a show house here a few years previously. He was drawn to the aesthetic, both architecturally and environmentally, “Palm Beach is one of the cleanest, most pristine, well-manicured areas of the U.S. And I think being here is nothing but inspirational.” It is also a hot-spot for mid-century modern architecture, a favorite style of Jonathan’s, “There’s a lot of beautiful Meisner homes here on Palm Beach that were built at a time when there was no expense that wasn’t put forth to create the perfect home. A lot of the Meisner homes up and down the ocean are complimentary to a lot of homes today that have been inspired by them.”
Jonathan’s own condominium is a wonderful example of the style, “I love the building I live in. It was designed by a Florida architect known for a take on mid-century modern architecture. His name was Eugene Lawrence. The building came to life in 1978 and when we purchased this particular unit in the building, we hired his son to help us redo the unit to bring it to life in a way that Mr. Lawrence may have done it 50 years later.”
The apartment has a full suite of Gaggenau appliances, because, as Jonathan says, “I would consider myself a foodie. I see Gaggenau as an exclusive brand that offers the finest quality, the finest control of heat and the latest technology. All three of those things were very important to me. With the sleek styling of their products, with my design aesthetic, I thought it was a match made in heaven.”
A pot filler tap sits above the full surface induction and Teppan Yaki cooktops with the wide EB333 oven below. On the wall to the right is the beloved coffee machine, combi microwave, culinary warming drawer and, behind the kitchen cabinetry, the fridge freezer. The muted tones of the kitchen furniture enhance the calming, effortlessly relaxed ambiance. The dishwasher sits beneath the counter that separates the kitchen and dining area. Here, the wine climate cabinet’s lighting options help to set the tone as the sun sets on another perfect lake shore evening.
